Print Window FAQ

I'm using Print Window 4.0 and nothing happens after I click the "Print" button in the "Print Options" window. What is wrong?

We have identified an issue with Print Window 4.0 where this can sometimes occur.

Check in the Preferences window in the "Behavior" pane and see if "Remember Page Setup Settings" is selected. If it is, try turning it off and see if that resolves the issue. If turning off this preference works for you, then that is what the issue is.

If this does resolve the problem, turn the preference back on (if you want it on) and then, after closing the Preferences window, select "Page Setup..." from the "File" menu. Set your default Page Setup settings and Print Window should work for you from there on out with that preference selected.

We are currently working on a Print Window 4.0.1 release that will fix this issue.

How can I set custom margins when printing with Print Window?

This is actually a setting that the OS itself provides, not Print Window. What you will need to do is create a custom paper size with the new margin definitions. (Please note that the instructions listed below are for Mac OS X 10.4.x or Mac OS X 10.5.x. This works slightly differently in earlier versions of Mac OS X.)

In the "Page Setup" dialog, select "Manage Custom Sizes..." from the "Paper Size" popup menu. In the "Custom Page Sizes" window that appears, click on the "+" button in the lower left. This adds a new custom paper size to the list. Double click on the new custom paper size and type a new name (in this example, we've named it "Custom Margins").

Custom Page Size

Make sure that the new custom paper size is selected. In the fields to the right, enter the dimensions of the paper you will be printing on. You can also enter the new margins that you want to use.

Once you have the page size and margins set the way you want them, click the "OK" button. Back in the Page Setup dialog, make sure your new paper size is selected from the "Paper Size" popup menu.

Page Setup

With this new paper size selected, Print Window will now honor the new margins you've defined.

Note that this custom paper size will remain in the "Paper Size" popup menu unless you delete it using the "Manage Custom Sizes..." option. This means that you don't have to go through these steps each time you want to use these margins!

I sent in payment for a license to Print Window Advanced, but haven't yet received my serial number? How do I get my number?

Searchware Solutions sends all serial numbers to the e-mail address used when making payemtn within 48 hours from the time of purchase. Although we try to process all registrations within a few hours of the purchase, please allow up to 48 hours.

If it has been more than 48 hours since your purchase, most likely your e-mail system's spam filter has mistakenly flagged your registration e-mail as junk mail. Check your e-mail's junk mail folder to see if your registration e-mail is there. If it is, great! If it is not, send us an e-mail to support@searchwaresolutions.com and let us know (please be sure to include a copy of your Kagi receipt, if possible) and we will resend your registration information to you within a few hours.

Note that you can always add the e-mail info@searchwaresolutions.com to your spam filter's white list to ensure you receive these e-mails.

I purchased Print Window Advanced but have not yet received the software. Where is the software?

When you purchase a license to Print Window Advanced, you are purchasing a license only. You will not actually be shipped any physical product. To obtain the Print Window software, simply download the software from the Print Window website.

Help! I lost my serial number for Print Window Advanced!

No problem. Simply send us an e-mail at and let us know you need your serial number again. Be sure to include the original e-mail and name you registered with. We'll get back to you, usually within 24 hours (and usually much sooner) with your registration information.

Why can I not set the number of columns I want Print Window to print?

Make sure you have the "Names Only" style selected. The option for number of columns only works in the "Names Only" style.

Can Print Window be run as a service?

Print Window 2.0 through 3.1.5 can be accessed through the Services menu. To use these versions of Print Window as a Service, you must make sure that the Print Window icon is located in the /Applications (the Applications folder at the root of your system drive). If it is properly installed, Print Window will appear in the Finder's Services menu as "Print File Listing..."

Note that this function has been removed from Print Window 4.0. This is due to some engineering changes made in this software. Searchware Solutions is looking into other methods of providing a "Print File Listing..." service in future versions of Print Window.

"Print File Listing..." appears in the Services menu, but is grayed out. What is wrong?

Most likely, you are using Mac OS X 10.1. Unfortunately, Mac OS X 10.1 does not properly support Services for Carbon applications. The Print Window service will only be available in Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

Print Window's dock menu is telling me "Application Not Responding." Has it crashed?

Most likely not. There is a known issue where Print Window's dock menu will give the "Application not Responding" message. Print Window has not crashed. There is really nothing wrong and this is cosmetic only. The message will disappear after you invoke Print Window for the first time after it's been launched. Version 2.1 and newer fixes this problem.
